Abstract: Numerous diseases can involve dogs and cats as vectors or reservoirs, in addition to the risk of direct aggression toward humans. A stray animal is defined as an animal that is not under human supervision or care and is able to move freely. This condition makes stray animals more susceptible to various diseases and, consequently, increases the risk of transmission of infectious agents to humans and other species. The objective of this study was to establish the frequency of the main diseases diagnosed in the canine and feline populations studied, according to their occurrence, age at presentation, and sex. In the present study, medical records from August 2022 to March 2023 were analyzed at the ALMA Animal Protection Association shelter, with the aim of identifying the main reasons for veterinary consultation among stray animals in the region. Based on the analysis of the data obtained, most of the animals admitted to the ALMA Animal Protection Association shelter were dogs younger than one year of age and cats between 3 and 7 years of age. Female cats were more frequently represented among the feline population. The animals studied mainly originated from the municipality of Tepeji del Río de Ocampo, Hidalgo. In both species, mixed-breed animals, commonly referred to as Mexican mixed-breed dogs and cats, were the most frequently admitted. The main body systems affected in the small animals studied were the gastrointestinal and integumentary systems. Dermatological disorders were the most common reason for veterinary consultation in dogs, whereas disorders of the musculoskeletal system were the most common reason for consultation in cats.
