| Abstract: | The project “Reproduction and Sustainable Use of Cnicus benedictus in the CONAFOR Agroecological Garden” aimed to reproduce blessed thistle through seeds and promote its sustainable management and use among rural producers. The work was carried out in the CONAFOR agroecological garden and the SEMARNAT nursery in Mexico City, using agroecological practices focused on natural resource conservation and productive diversification. Cnicus benedictus is an annual plant belonging to the Asteraceae family, native to the Mediterranean region, and traditionally recognized for its medicinal properties, mainly digestive, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antibacterial. Its incorporation into agroecological gardens represents an alternative for strengthening biodiversity and the sustainable use of medicinal plants. For reproduction, 105 seeds were obtained from four dried flowers and sown in seedbeds using a substrate composed of dry leaves, composted organic matter, and tezontle. After approximately two months of management and irrigation, 98 seeds germinated, reaching a germination rate of 93.3%. Subsequently, the seedlings received constant irrigation, preventive phytosanitary management, and mycorrhizal applications to promote root development and improve water and nutrient absorption. Once they reached an appropriate size, the seedlings were transplanted into pots and planting beds prepared using double digging and compost application. The plants showed good adaptation, sustained growth, and favorable root development. As part of the community component, a theoretical and practical workshop was conducted on the reproduction, management, ecological importance, and medicinal uses of blessed thistle, with the participation of 25 rural producers. In addition, participants carried out a practical planting activity within the garden. In conclusion, the project demonstrated that the agroecological reproduction and management of Cnicus benedictus is a viable, replicable, and low-cost alternative that can contribute to natural resource conservation, productive diversification, and the strengthening of local capacities. |
