Participación en la preservación de la colección entomológica nacional del Instituto de biología de la UNAM, mediante el montaje, separado e identificación de materiales.

Abstract

El servicio social se desarrolló en la Colección Nacional de Insectos (CNIN) del Instituto de Biología de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), con el objetivo de contribuir al fortalecimiento, organización y conservación de uno de los acervos entomológicos con más relevancia de México. En este contexto las colecciones biológicas representan herramientas fundamentales para el estudio de la biodiversidad, ya que resguardan ejemplares que evidencian la riqueza biológica, su distribución y su variación en el tiempo, además de servir como base para investigaciones taxonómicas, sistemáticas, ecológicas y biogeográficas. Durante el periodo del Servicio Social, se realizaron actividades diversas y labores técnicas especializadas, enfocadas hacia el montaje, etiquetado, organización y mantenimiento de ejemplares entomológicos. En éste tiempo, se llevó a cabo el montaje de 1,852 insectos mediante el empleo de alfileres entomológicos y triángulos de papel para organismos de menor tamaño y aplicando técnicas curatoriales adecuadas para la preservación de sus características morfológicas. Asimismo, se etiquetaron 1,840 ejemplares, asegurando la correcta incorporación de datos de colecta en las etiquetas oficiales, lo que garantiza su valor científico y documental. Adicionalmente, se realizó la reorganización de aproximadamente 350 ejemplares, principalmente del orden Lepidoptera, ubicándolos en nuevas cajas entomológicas para optimizar su distribución y resguardo. Las actividades de servicio también incluyeron la elaboración y preparación de etiquetas oficiales para la colección, la fabricación de triángulos de montaje, la reubicación de material entomológico y el apoyo en la ampliación de áreas de almacenamiento. Estas acciones contribuyeron al mantenimiento preventivo, y a la adecuada organización taxonómica del acervo. Como complemento en la formación, también se participó en exposiciones de material entomológico, lo que permitió fortalecer la comprensión de aspectos biológicos y agronómicos relacionados con los ejemplares trabajados. En conjunto, el servicio social contribuyó en el fortalecimiento del acervo de la CNIN y favoreció la formación en el manejo, conservación y documentación de la biodiversidad existente.

The social service was carried out at the National Insect Collection (CNIN) of the Biology Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), with the objective of contributing to the strengthening, organization, and conservation of one of the most important entomological collections in Mexico. In this context, biological collections represent fundamental tools for the study of biodiversity, as they preserve specimens that demonstrate biological richness, distribution, and variation over time, while also serving as a basis for taxonomic, systematic, ecological, and biogeographical research. During the social service period, various activities and specialized technical tasks were conducted, focused on the mounting, labeling, organization, and maintenance of entomological specimens. During this time, a total of 1,852 insects were mounted using entomological pins and paper triangles for smaller organisms, applying appropriate curatorial techniques to preserve their morphological characteristics. Likewise, 1,840 specimens were labeled, ensuring the correct incorporation of collection data into the official labels, which guarantees their scientific and documentary value. Additionally, approximately 350 specimens, mainly belonging to the order Lepidoptera, were reorganized and relocated into new entomological boxes in order to optimize their distribution and preservation. The service activities also included the preparation of official collection labels, the manufacture of mounting triangles, the relocation of entomological material, and support in the expansion of storage areas. These actions contributed to preventive maintenance and to the proper taxonomic organization of the collection. As part of the complementary training, participation in entomological material exhibitions also took place, strengthening the understanding of biological and agronomic aspects related to the studied specimens. Overall, the social service contributed to strengthening the CNIN collection and promoted training in the management, conservation, and documentation of existing biodiversity.
