Cuidando la salud de nuestras mascotas : la prevención como prioridad

Abstract

Responsible pet ownership is based on two main pillars: vaccination and sterilization, which benefit both the individual animal and public health. Vaccination creates a protective shield against deadly diseases (such as parvovirus or rabies, which is a zoonosis) and ensures a longer life for the pet. For its part, sterilization is the most effective tool for the ethical control of birth rates, helping to combat overpopulation and abandonment. Additionally, it offers significant health benefits for the animal, such as eliminating the risk of testicular cancer in males and reducing mammary cancer and life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra) in females. The Public Veterinary Clinic of the Venustiano Carranza Borough is a preventive center that offers essential services such as consultations, deworming, vaccinations, sterilizations, euthanasia, and cremations. It also plays a social role by sheltering and finding homes for animals rescued from abuse and neglect. The activities performed as social service at the clinic include assisting in consultations and surgeries, performing physical exams, administering medications and vaccines (to both outpatients and sheltered animals), performing canine and feline sterilizations, and giving talks on preventive medicine. The general objective of the plan was to improve animal health and welfare by promoting responsible veterinary medicine practices. During the social service period (May to November), approximately 4,000 consultations, 1,000 vaccinations, 1,500 dewormings, and 1,300 surgeries were provided (60% of which were sterilizations), achieving 95% of the established goals and objectives. In conclusion, the work of preventive clinics like this one is crucial for addressing the problem of abandonment and fostering collaboration between veterinarians and owners. It is worth noting that the clinic is an excellent place to perform social service, as its staff is dedicated and ethical, providing the opportunity to learn and practice veterinary medicine despite facing the reality of irresponsible owners.

La tenencia responsable de mascotas se basa en dos pilares: la vacunación y la esterilización, que benefician tanto al animal individual como a la salud pública. La vacunación crea un escudo protector contra enfermedades mortales (como el parvovirus o la rabia, que es una zoonosis) y asegura una vida más larga a la mascota. Por su parte, la esterilización es la herramienta más efectiva para el control ético de la natalidad, ayudando a combatir la sobrepoblación y el abandono. Además, ofrece grandes beneficios para la salud individual de la mascota, como la eliminación del riesgo de cáncer testicular en machos y la reducción de cáncer de mama e infecciones uterinas mortales (piómetra) en hembras. La Clínica Veterinaria Pública de la Alcaldía Venustiano Carranza es un centro preventivo que ofrece servicios esenciales como consultas, desparasitación, vacunas, esterilizaciones, eutanasias y cremaciones. También juega un rol social al resguardar y buscar hogar para animales rescatados del maltrato y abandono. Las actividades realizadas como servicio social en la clínica incluyen auxiliar en consultas y cirugías, realizar exámenes físicos, administrar medicamentos y vacunas (tanto a pacientes externos como a los animales en resguardo), realizaciones de esterilizaciones caninas y felinas, e impartir pláticas de medicina preventiva. El objetivo general del plan fue mejorar la salud y el bienestar animal promoviendo prácticas responsables de medicina veterinaria. Durante el periodo de servicio social (mayo a noviembre), se brindaron aproximadamente 4,000 consultas, 1,000 vacunas, 1,500 desparasitaciones y 1,300 cirugías (siendo el 60% esterilizaciones), logrando un 95% de objetivos y metas cumplidas. En conclusión, la labor de clínicas preventivas como está es crucial para abordar el problema del abandono y fomentar la colaboración entre veterinarios y propietarios. Destacando que la clínica es un excelente lugar para realizar el servicio social, ya que su personal es dedicado, ético y brinda la oportunidad de aprender y practicar la medicina veterinaria, a pesar de enfrentar la realidad de propietarios irresponsables.
