Actividades de laboratorio en el Centro de Investigación y Gastroenterología

Abstract

Clinical research helps identify new and improved methods for the detection, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of disease. One of the prototype designs in clinical research consists of clinical trials, in which treatments (which may be novel) for a given disease are tested (Zurita-Cruz, 2019). Liver-related diseases encompass a broad spectrum of conditions ranging from simple steatosis to the gradual development of inflammatory steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and ultimately cirrhosis and primary hepatocellular carcinoma, all of which can lead to liver-related morbidity and mortality (Bellentani et al., 2010). Unfortunately, there are still no effective antifibrotic treatments, and the disease remains clinically silent in most patients, often being discovered only post-mortem [Alter et al. (1992)]. The Center for Research and Gastroenterology (CIG) is a facility that conducts phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials, double-blind and placebo-controlled, carried out by research centers worldwide. Among these, the CIG stands as a leader in its field, ranking among the top five globally. The main objectives of the CIG are to improve the care of individuals suffering from, or at risk of developing, hepatic and digestive diseases by offering alternative treatments aimed at reducing the impact of these conditions on patients’ lives and on Mexican society, as well as to provide further information on liver and digestive diseases that may support the approval of new treatments. The laboratory and pharmacy departments at the CIG are among the most critical areas for achieving these objectives. The laboratory is responsible for collecting, processing, storing, and shipping the biological samples of each patient participating in clinical studies, maintaining high quality standards throughout every process. The pharmacy, in turn, is responsible for safeguarding investigational products provided by each study protocol under optimal conditions. These products will serve as treatment for each patient. The pharmacy is also tasked with documenting and inventorying all materials and events related to the area. The experience gained through the social service program in the laboratory and pharmacy departments at the Center for Research and Gastroenterology is invaluable, opening a world of professional and personal development opportunities.

Las investigaciones clínicas ayudan a encontrar nuevas y mejores formas de detección, diagnóstico, tratamiento, pronóstico y prevención de una enfermedad. Uno de los diseños prototipo en la investigación clínica lo constituyen los ensayos clínicos, en los que se prueban tratamientos (que pueden ser nuevos) para una enfermedad. (Zurita-Cruz, 2019) Las enfermedades relacionadas con el hígado comprenden un espectro de enfermedades que van desde la esteatosis simple hasta el desarrollo gradual de la esteatohepatitis inflamatoria, fibrosis y, finalmente, cirrosis y hepatocarcinoma primario, lo que puede causar morbilidad y mortalidad relacionada con el hígado. (Bellentani et al 2010.), lamentablemente aún no existen tratamientos antifibróticos efectivos, además de que la enfermedad es clínicamente silenciosa en la mayoría de los pacientes, y frecuentemente se descubre sólo post-mortem [Alter et al.(1992)]. El Centro de investigación y gastroenterología (CIG) es un centro que aplica ensayos clínicos (EC) fase 2 y fase 3, doble ciego, controladas con placebo, que son ejecutadas por centros de investigación a nivel mundial, de los cuales el CIG, es líder en su rama, y compite entre los primeros 5 lugares a nivel mundial. Los principales objetivos de CIG son mejorar la atención a personas que sufren enfermedades hepáticas y digestivas o están en riesgo de padecerlas, ofreciendo alternativa de tratamiento para reducir el impacto que tiene estas enfermedades en la vida del paciente y en la sociedad mexicana, y proporcionar más información sobre enfermedades hepáticas y digestivas, para la aprobación de nuevos tratamientos en estas enfermedades. El área de laboratorio y farmacia en el CIG, es uno de los más relevantes para dichos objetivos, ya que laboratorio es el responsable de tomar, procesar, almacenar y enviar, las muestras bilógicas de cada paciente que participa en los estudios clínicos, con altos estándares de calidad en cada uno de los procesos. Por su parte farmacia, es responsable de resguardar en optimas condiciones los productos de investigación proporcionados por cada protocolo, los cuales serán tratamiento de cada paciente, además de documentar e inventariar cada uno de los materiales y eventos en dicha área. Las experiencias que ha dejado el servicio social en el área de laboratorio y farmacia del Centro de investigación y Gastroenterología, es invaluable, abriendo un mundo de posibilidades laborales y de desarrollo profesional y personal.
