Abstract

The project focuses on the evaluation of the welfare of dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) under professional care in semi-free conditions. Its main objective is to establish a set of parameters and goals that allow for the assessment of these animals welfare in a controlled environment, where, although they have a certain degree of freedom of movement, they remain under professional supervision and management. This approach is considered crucial to ensure that dromedaries can express natural behaviors, maintain optimal health, and experience adequate emotional well-being, despite not being in their natural habitat. To achieve these objectives, the project includes an evaluation of various welfare indicators. These include the observation of the animals natural behavior, its interaction with the environment and other specimens, and its response to the care provided, such as feeding, access to water, medical management, and the environmental conditions in which it is kept. Each of these factors will be analyzed in detail to identify any potential issues that may negatively impact the dromedarys welfare. In addition to the evaluation, the project also focuses on identifying specific problems that may compromise the welfare of dromedaries in these semi-free conditions. These issues may range from aspects related to the physical environment to matters of management and veterinary care. Once identified, solutions and corrective strategies will be proposed to directly address areas of improvement, seeking to optimize management practices and ensure that the highest standards of animal welfare are met.

El proyecto se centra en la evaluación del bienestar del dromedario (Camelus dromedarius) bajo cuidado profesional en condiciones de semilibertad. Su objetivo principal es establecer un conjunto de parámetros y objetivos que permitan evaluar el bienestar de estos ejemplares en un entorno controlado, donde aunque cuentan con cierta libertad de movimiento, siguen bajo la supervisión y manejo profesional. Este enfoque se considera crucial para asegurar que los dromedarios puedan expresar comportamientos naturales, mantener un estado de salud óptimo y experimentar un bienestar emocional adecuado, a pesar de no estar en su hábitat natural. Para lograr estos objetivos, el proyecto contempla una evaluación de diversos indicadores de bienestar. Entre ellos se incluyen la observación del comportamiento natural del animal, su interacción con el entorno y otros ejemplares, y la respuesta a los cuidados proporcionados, como la alimentación, el acceso a agua, el manejo médico, y las condiciones ambientales en las que se encuentra. Cada uno de estos factores se analizará en detalle para identificar cualquier posible problema que pueda afectar negativamente el bienestar del dromedario. Además de la evaluación, el proyecto también se enfoca en la identificación de problemáticas específicas que puedan comprometer el bienestar del dromedario en estas condiciones de semilibertad. Estas problemáticas pueden variar desde aspectos relacionados con el entorno físico hasta cuestiones de manejo y atención veterinaria. Una vez identificadas, se propondrán soluciones y estrategias correctivas que aborden directamente las áreas de mejora, buscando optimizar las prácticas de manejo y asegurar que se cumplen los más altos estándares de bienestar animal.
