Cine de epidemias virales : figuras retóricas e imaginario social

Abstract

This research links filmmaking, rhetorical figures and the social imaginary of viral epidemics. In order to contribute elements to the study of this relationship, the following hypothesis was presented: due to their influence on the possible effects of meaning of filmic texts, rhetorical figures operate as markers of the social imaginary. The first part of the thesis includes two chapters. The first one offers an approach to the history of some viral diseases and the way in which their presence was interpreted in populations of different eras. The second chapter consists of a review of films that have staged an epidemic. A segment of these films shows catastrophic situations that put an end to civilization. The second part of the research presents the theoretical and methodological framework. The third chapter explores studies on film making and the imaginary. In this regard, the chapter reviews some of the theoretical contributions of Edgar Morin, Christian Metz, Cornelius Castoriadis, Gilbert Durand, Gérard Imbert, and Patrick Charaudeau. The fourth chapter discusses different research on rhetoric. Some of the researchers referred to in this chapter, such as Roland Barthes, the μ Group or Trevor Whittock, carry out analyses whose methods illustrate different ways of studying rhetorical figures in literary works, advertising posters and cinematographic texts. The fifth chapter is in the third part, which includes an analysis of the film And the band played on (dir. Roger Spottiswoode, 1993). The screenplay of this melodramatic film is based on a journalistic investigation of the early years of the AIDS epidemic. Some of the findings indicate that the film places metaphorical images of death before the eyes of the infected characters. Likewise, at the beginning of the film, a mysterious image of the disease emerges, but scientific research changes this situation. The use of analogies makes it possible to illustrate the intellectual process carried out by the researchers as they try to decipher the disease.

Esta investigación establece un vínculo entre el cine, las figuras retóricas y el imaginario social de las epidemias virales. Con el objetivo de aportar elementos al estudio de esta relación, se formuló la siguiente hipótesis: debido a su influencia sobre los posibles efectos de sentido de los textos fílmicos, las figuras retóricas funcionan como marcadores del imaginario social. La primera parte de la tesis incluye dos capítulos. El primero ofrece un acercamiento a la historia de algunas enfermedades virales y la forma en la que se interpretó su presencia en poblaciones de diferentes épocas. El segundo capítulo consiste en una revisión de películas que han puesto en escena una epidemia. Un segmento de las cintas referidas muestra situaciones catastróficas que acaban con la civilización. La segunda parte de la investigación presenta el marco teórico y metodológico. En el tercer capítulo, se hace una exploración de los estudios sobre el cine y lo imaginario. Al respecto, el capítulo revisa algunas de las aportaciones teóricas de Edgar Morin, Christian Metz, Cornelius Castoriadis, Gilbert Durand, Gérard Imbert y Patrick Charaudeau. Por su parte, el cuarto capítulo se aproxima a diversas investigaciones sobre retórica. Algunos investigadores referidos en este capítulo, como Roland Barthes, el Grupo µ o Trevor Whittock, realizan análisis cuyos métodos ilustran diferentes vías para el estudio de las figuras retóricas en obras literarias, carteles publicitarios y textos cinematográficos. En la tercera parte se encuentra el quinto capítulo que incluye el análisis de la película En el filo de la duda (And the band played on, dir. Roger Spottiswoode, 1993). Se trata de un filme melodramático cuyo guion se basó en una investigación periodística para contar los primeros años de la epidemia del sida. Algunos de los resultados indican que la película coloca imágenes metafóricas de la muerte ante los ojos de los personajes infectados. Asimismo, al inicio de la cinta se erige una imagen misteriosa de la enfermedad, pero la investigación científica cambia esa situación. El uso de analogías permite ilustrar el proceso intelectual que llevan a cabo los investigadores mientras intentan descifrar la enfermedad.
