Title: Desempeño productivo de los búfalos y sus opciones de desarrollo en las regiones tropicales

Description: En este trabajo se propone una sistematización de información sobre los búfalos con el fin de evaluar sus ventajas y desventajas para perfilarse como una opción para los productores de las regiones tropicales. Se basa en una amplia revisión de literatura, privilegiando la de carácter científico, para examinar sus características fisiológicas, de alimentación y nutrición, genéticas y de reproducción, así como las de sus productos: carne y leche. Se detectaron ventajas en su proceso de adaptación a los hábitats complejos del trópico húmedo, aprovechando recursos forrajeros de baja calidad, facilidades de manejo, rendimientos competitivos respecto a los vacunos y productos con potencial de valorarse en el mercado. Se concluyó que los búfalos representan una opción para diversificar la producción ganadera, con posibilidades de generar ingresos adicionales a los productores pecuarios y favorecer el desarrollo regional del trópico húmedo.   Information on buffaloes was systematized to assess their advantages and disadvantages as an option for producers in tropical regions. An extensive review of literature was carried out, giving priority to scientific information, to examine their physiological, food and nutrition, genetic and reproductive characteristics, as well as those of their main products: meat and milk. The advantages identified are their process of adaptation to complex habitats of the humid tropics, use of low quality fodder resources, handling facilities, competitive yields with respect to cattle and products with potential to be valued in the market. Their limitations are: need for shade and access to bodies of water and manifestation of discrete oestrous. It was concluded that buffaloes are an option for diversifying livestock production, with the possibility of generating additional income for livestock producers and favoring regional development of the humid tropics.
