Title: Factores productivos y su incidencia en el bienestar de la búfala lechera en sistemas de producción extensivos e intensivos: una revisión

Description: La producción de leche ha avanzado en su proceso de intensificación, en el cual se han insertado a las búfalas; en esa medida se ha deteriorado su nivel de bienestar, impactando en su nivel de productividad y en la calidad de la leche. En este artículo se revisan los factores que han influido en esta dinámica, considerando los inherentes al animal, asimismo los resultantes del ambiente. Para ello, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica, priorizando artículos científicos recientes sobre el bienestar de las búfalas lecheras en diferentes contextos productivos. Se propone un análisis contrastado del bienestar de las búfalas en sistemas extensivos e intensivos, resaltando los cambios que supone este segundo sistema, como cambio de dieta, reducción de espacios, ordeña mecánica y separación temprana de la cría, entre otros, por lo cual se proponen algunas medidas de atención, como incluir en los criterios de selección, los animales dóciles y la disposición de charcas en las áreas de las fincas para que practiquen la termorregulación y disminuyan el estrés por calor.   Milk production has progressed in an intensification process in which buffaloes have been inserted; deteriorating their welfare level, impacting on productivity and milk quality. This article reviews factors that have influenced this dynamic, considering those referring to the animal as those resulting from the environment. For this purpose, a bibliographic review was carried out, prioritizing recent scientific articles on dairy buffaloes’ welfare in different productive contexts. It is proposed a contrasted analysis of buffaloes’ welfare in extensive and intensive systems, highlighting changes that this second system implies, such as diet change, space reduction, mechanical milking and early separation of breeding, among others. For this reason, attention measures are proposed, such as including docile animals in selection criteria and the disposition of ponds in farm areas so that they practice thermoregulation and decrease heat stress.
