La discapacidad y sus significados: Notas sobre la (in)justicia

Abstract

We can find a lot of arguments around the topic of handicap that try to explain us this condition, but is important to think about them like social subjects, because the handicap is more than a condition that markedly restricts a person’s ability to function physically or mentally. The handicap is a social construction with different meanings and it permits some changes in the way the different societies have been organized to face physical differences. In this paper, we have tried to recover some of the significations that the Mexican society has attributed to this condition; it can help us to orientate our think about the relation between the handicap and the area of the justice.

Dada la cantidad de argumentos que atribuyen a la “naturaleza” la condición de discapacidad, es importante colocar el tema en el centro de nuestras consideraciones como sujetos sociales. La discapacidad es, en su sentido más amplio, una construcción social; es decir, uno de los modos de organización que las sociedades se han dado a sí mismas para hacer frente a la diferencia orgánica o funcional. En este trabajo hemos tratado de recuperar algunas de las significaciones que la sociedad mexicana ha atribuido a esta condición; ello puede orientar nuestras reflexiones acerca de la relación entre la discapacidad y el terreno de la justicia.
