Chile: Indígenas y mestizos negados

Abstract

Starting with the symbol of the iceberg sent by Chile to the 1992 World Exposition in Seville, this article analyzes how and why indigenous and mestizo identities have been denied in that country since the onset of the colonial era, with preference given to “whiteness” as the guiding principle of national identity. It also studies some of the ways in which those denied identities have reemerged on the public stage, both when national identity is questioned and when the rewriting of history offers another reading of the country.

A partir del símbolo del iceberg enviado por Chile a la Exposición Mundial de Sevilla en 1992, en el artículo se analiza cómo y por qué las identidades indígena y mestiza han sido negadas en ese país desde los inicios de la era colonial en aras de que prevalezca la “blanquitud” como eje rector de la identidad nacional. Se analizan, asimismo, algunas de las maneras en que estas identidades negadas reaparecen en el escenario público, lo mismo cuando la identidad nacional es cuestionada que cuando la reescritura de la historia “lee” de otra manera al país.
