Evolución y funcionamiento de las redes de tráfico de personas en México

Abstract

Este artículo, sustentado en entrevistas con 212 traficantes de migrantes, examina los cambios producidos en el negocio del tráfico humano en la frontera suroeste de Estados Unidos durante el periodo 2008-2022. Se concluye que, para contrarrestar las pérdidas económicas producidas por un incremento de la seguridad fronteriza, una diversificación de actividades de los cárteles mexicanos y un descenso de la migración mexicana, el negocio del tráfico de migrantes utiliza dos estrategias. Por una parte, los migrantes centroamericanos se convirtieron en los principales clientes de estas redes. Por otra, aumentó el tráfico de mujeres para la prostitución.

This article, based on interviews with 212 migrant smugglers, examines the changes in the human smuggling business on the southwest border of the United States during the period 2008-2022. We concluded that, to counteract the economic losses produced by an increase in border security, a diversification of the activities of Mexican drug cartels and a decrease in Mexican migration, the migrant smuggling business has used two strategies. On the one hand, Central American migrants have become the main clients of these networks. On the other hand, smuggling in women for prostitution has increased.
