The State´s New Clothes: NGOs and the Internationalization of States

Abstract

Las organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONG) son una industria en crecimiento no sólo desde el punto de vista de su número, sino también de su importancia para periodistas y científicos políticos. Aunque mientras tanto algunas personas han puesto los pies en la tierra, muchos cifran aún sus esperanzas en que las ONG alcancen cierto cambio social liberador. Están teniendo lugar cambios fundamentales en la relación entre el “Estado” y la “sociedad” y en los modos de regulación política. Junto a ello tiene lugar el mayor cambio en las estructuras de la democracia liberal. Las ONG son tanto una expresión como un actor de estos procesos.

Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are a growth industry, not only in terms of numbers but also in terms of their significance for journalists and political scientists. Some people have come down to earth again in the meantime, but many still place their hopes in NGO’s to bring about liberating social change. Fundamental changes are taking place in the relationship between “state” and “society” and in the modes of political regulation. Associated with this is the major change in the structures of liberal democracy. Non-governmental organizations are both an expression of and an actor in these processes.
