Una visión crítica de tradicionalidad y modernidad

Abstract

The elimination of premodern institutions and conceptions is generally believed to be essential and, consequently, positive if we are to speed up historical evolution and attain the longed-for goal of material progress. From the perspective of modernity, traditionality has been considered fundamentally negative. However, the process of modernization involves destructive factors that have only recently begun to be perceived realistically. Some premodern elements deserve a better fate within intellectual awareness, such as religion as a source of meaning and comfort, the conception of art and literature as an esthetic based on beauty, and some values that cannot be quantified in material terms.

La eliminación de instituciones y concepciones premodernas por lo general se considera imprescindible y, por ende, positiva para acelerar la evolución histórica y alcanzar el anhelado objetivo del progreso material. La tradicionalidad ha sido vista desde la modernidad como algo fundamentalmente negativo. El proceso de modernización engloba, sin embargo, factores destructivos, que sólo en fechas recientes empiezan a ser percibidos de modo realista. Algunos elementos premodernos merecen una mejor suerte en la conciencia intelectual, como la religión en cuanto fuente de sentido y consuelo; la concepción del arte y la literatura como una estética fundamentada en lo bello, y algunos valores no cuantificables materialmente.
