De la tragedia al malestar en la cultura: Georg Simmel y Sigmund Freud

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to make a reflection about the diagnostics on the discomfort in the modern culture, elaborated by Georg Simmel and Sigmund Freud at the end of xixth century. The idea is to analyze the role that both thinkers assign to the effects on the interior of the individual, caused by the so called illnesses of modernity (rationality, calculation, indifference, repression of the instincts, moral, etcetera). On the other hand, we try to emphasize the originality of both thinkers and, at the same time, the parallelism of his reflections in a time and a contiguous space (Vienna and Berlin). Both reflections sustained in an original style and a will of rupture with the scientific and cultural canons of their time. Finally, what we have indicated before is taken to a conclusion in which we have postulated the necessity to reconstruct the principles and the social methods whereupon sciences—especially sociology—approach a social reality in which a subject/object exists and speaks for himself.

El propósito de este artículo es hacer una reflexión cruzada acerca de los diagnósticos sobre el malestar en la cultura moderna elaborados por Georg Simmel y Sigmund Freud a finales del siglo xix. La idea es analizar el papel que ambos pensadores le asignan a los efectos sobre el interior del individuo causados por los llamados males de la modernidad (la racionalidad, el cálculo, la indolencia, la represión de los instintos, la moral, entre otros). Por otra parte, se pretende destacar la originalidad de ambos pensadores y, al mismo tiempo, el paralelismo de sus reflexiones en un tiempo y en un espacio contiguo (Viena y Berlín). Ambas reflexiones sustentadas en un estilo original y una voluntad de ruptura con los cánones científicos y culturales de la época. Finalmente, lo anterior es llevado a una conclusión en la que se postula la necesidad de reconstruir los principios y los métodos con que las ciencias sociales y en especial la sociología se acercan a una realidad social en la que existe un sujeto-objeto que habla de sí.
