Periodista salvadoreños: Entre la espada de las pandillas y la pared policial

Abstract

Ser periodista en El Salvador es vivir entre dos peligros. El primero son las pandillas, cuyo rostro más visible es su vinculación –comprobada en un caso, en investigación en otros– con el asesinato de comunicadores; pero incluye también amenazas e intimidaciones no siempre denunciadas por temor a represalias. El otro es menos explorado: los amedrentamientos que han efectuado desconocidos contra reporteros justo después de revelar que estructuras policiales cometían abusos de poder. Ambos –policía y pandillas– son señalados por los mismos periodistas como agentes que los han puesto en riesgo. Se trata de un fenómeno que tiene a parte del gremio entre la espada y la pared; pero además debajo de un débil techo en el que el Estado más que proteger calla y, algunas veces, incluso tolera.

Being a journalist in El Salvador means living between two threats. The first is the gangs, whose most visible face is their connection –proven in one case, in investigation in otherswith the murder of communicators; but it also includes threats and intimidation not always reported for fear of reprisals. The other one is less explored: the intimidations, made by unidentified individuals, that journalists and the media face just after revealing that police structures committed abuses of power. Both –police and gangs– are pointed out by journalists as agents that have put them at risk. It is a phenomenon that has the guild between two dangers, but also under a weak roof in which the State more than to protecting them, keeps silent and, sometimes, even tolerates.
