Cultivos y alimentos transgénicos en México

Abstract

El presente artículo proporciona una visión actual de la situación de los cultivos transgénicos en México y en el mundo, para de ahí ubicar el debate contemporáneo respecto de estas nuevas plantas y los organismos genéticamente modificados (OGM) en general. De esta manera, se describe cuáles eran los temas de discusión en la década de 1980, cuando comienzan a aparecer los primeros OGM y cómo se ha reposicionado la polémica en la actualidad. Se enfatizan los impactos socioeconómicos, políticos y culturales de estos nuevos organismos en los países como México, con una agricultura débil, dependencia alimentaria y alta biodiversidad. Asimismo, se analiza la situación de México respecto de los OGM, resaltando la polémica en torno al maíz transgénico en el país. Finalmente, se concluye con una breve reflexión respecto de la pertinencia de liberar en la agricultura mexicana la siembra de estas nuevas plantas, específicamente el maíz, y cómo afectaría esto la situación agrícola y alimentaria del país. This essay gives a nowadays view about transgenic crops in Mexico and the World, in order to deal with contemporary debate about these new plants and genetically modified organisms (GMO) in general. I describe what issues were discussed in the 80’s, when the first GMO appeared and how the controversy has been transformed in present times. I emphasize socioeconomic, politic and cultural impacts of GMO in countries like Mexico, where agriculture is weak, there is food dependency and high biodiversity.
