Caimanes en las alcantarillas de Nueva York

Abstract

The contemporary legend of the “Alligators in the Sewers of New York” is well known all over the planet and has created local variants in several big cities. Its appearance (in the 1960s) and development (in which short stories, novels and fiction movies played a great role) are detailed here. The real elements that make this story plausible are presented: trade, national and international, in young crocodiles, pythons and turtles is brisk; numerous stray exotic animals are picked up in big cities by the authorities. However it is the symbolic value of this story that explains its important and lasting success. Beyond the castration metaphor deciphered in the story by psychoanalysis the encounter between the alligators’ pure aggressiveness and the sewers’ urban dejections allows to comment the dangers of the modern city. This story is a metaphor of the city as jungle.

La leyenda contemporánea de “Caimanes en las alcantarillas de Nueva York” es conocida en todo el planeta y ha dado lugar a variantes localizadas en numerosas capitales. En este artículo se analiza su aparición –alrededor de la década de 1960– y su desarrollo, debido a que ha sido retomada en muchas noticias, novelas y películas de ficción. También se estudian los vínculos presentes de la leyenda con la realidad. Sin embargo, es el valor simbólico de esta historia la que explica su éxito y persistencia. Aquí se trata de ir más allá de la metáfora de la castración que encuentra el psicoanálisis en la leyenda para considerarla como una metáfora de la ciudad como jungla: la agresividad de los caimanes y los desechos urbanos en los desagües permiten comentar los peligros de la gran ciudad moderna.
