Nakaq: una historia del miedo

Abstract

This article analyzes the resurgence of the nakaq (cutthroat), a mythical character, legendary in the Andean culture ever since the Spanish colonization. This character reemerges in the context of the war between the State and Sendero Luminoso (the Peruvian Communist Party), at a time in which it had an unexpected presence in 1987. It reached its climax on September 11th of the same year with the killing of an alleged nakaq by thousands of people living in the peripheral neighborhoods of the city of Ayacucho, Peru. The pivotal point of the analysis is in the proposal that social imaginary has symbolic effectiveness and establishes reality, in this case, by means of the complex articulation of rumor and myth.

En este artículo se analiza la reaparición del nakaq (degollador) –un personaje mítico-legendario de la cultura andina desde la Colonia. Este personaje resurge en una coyuntura situada en el contexto de la guerra que enfrentó el Estado peruano con Sendero Luminoso (Partido Comunista Peruano), periodo en el que tomó inusitada presencia en 1987. Llegó a su clímax el 11 de septiembre de ese año con el asesinato de un supuesto nakaq por millares de pobladores de barrios periféricos de la ciudad de Ayacucho, Perú. El eje de análisis se construye a partir de la propuesta de que los imaginarios sociales tienen eficacia simbólica y constituyen la realidad, en este caso, a partir de la compleja articulación de rumor y mito.
