Rumores y estrategias de guerra

Abstract

Durante la Guerra de las Malvinas (1982), que enfrentó a la Argentina con Gran Bretaña, circuló en la prensa argentina un rumor sobre un submarino nuclear perteneciente a las fuerzas británicas, capaz de acabar con la flota argentina. El rumor se mantuvo durante más de veinte días en los periódicos nacionales y tuvo como efecto que los altos mandos navales retiraran los barcos argentinos de la zona de guerra, confirmando su naturaleza claramente estratégica. ¿Cómo se construye un rumor y cuáles son las mediaciones textuales y discursivas que permiten su transformación en una “noticia” verosímil?, ¿cuáles son las distinciones socioculturales y mediáticas que permiten que un rumor, mediante un proceso de semiosis, adquiera valor ontológico? Este texto describe los mecanismos de circulación de la historia del submarino inglés Superb; se construye un mundo posible mediático y se concluye acerca del uso estratégico de los rumores en tiempos de guerra.

During the course of the Falklands/Malvinar war (1982) between Argentina and Great Britain, a persistent rumour about the dispatch –by the British forces– of a high-calibre nuclear submarine –capable of destroying the Argentine fleet–, circulated in the Argentine press. The rumour, which lasted for more than twenty days in the national newspapers, had an effect that resulted in the naval hierarchy’s withdrawal of the Argentine ships from the war zone, thus confirming its clearly strategic nature. How does a rumour get constructed and what are the textual and discursive mediations that allow its transformation into a verisimilar ‘news item’? This paper describes the circulation mechanisms of the story of the British submarine Superb and the construction of a media possible world. In doing so, it allows conclusions about the strategic use of rumours in times of war, to be drawn.
