El rumor del Chupacabras en México

Abstract

The Rumor of the Goat-Sucker in Mexico. Interwoven Oral and Media Discourses. This article underlines the interrelationship of oral and media discourses through the analysis of the rumor about the existence of the goat-sucker, a being that sucks the blood of animals, particularly goats, and sometimes human beings, sometimes killing them. This rumor circulated above all in the 1990s in Mexico, other Latin American countries and the United States. The first part of the article points out the way in which some media participated in creating the goat-sucker rumor in Mexico. The second part is an analysis of the different oral versions of the rumor produced by subjects in two different cultural contexts in Mexican society: a semi-urban sector that assigns great verisimilitude to the rumor and an urban sector that assigns it none. At the end of the article, the authors analyze how subjects appropriate differently the media messages about the rumor in both contexts, comparing their different kinds of verisimilitude.

En este artículo se destaca la interrelación que establecen los discursos orales con los discursos mediáticos a partir del análisis del rumor del Chupacabras. Dicho rumor versa sobre un ser que chupa la sangre de los animales, sobre todo de las cabras y a veces de seres humanos, produciéndoles en ocasiones la muerte. Circuló sobre todo en los noventa en México, Estados Unidos y otros países de América Latina. En una primera parte se señala la manera como algunos medios de comunicación participaron en la configuración del rumor del Chupacabras en México. En la segunda parte se presenta un análisis de las versiones orales distintas de dicho rumor producidas por sujetos en dos contextos culturales diferentes en la sociedad mexicana: en un sector social semiurbano que le confiere gran verosimilitud al rumor del Chupacabras y en un sector urbano que no le atribuye ninguna verosimilitud. Al final, se analiza la distinta apropiación de los mensajes mediáticos relacionados con el rumor en ambos contextos y se comparan sus diferentes regímenes de verosimilitud.
