Continuidades en la estigmatización social del cuerpo enfermo

Abstract

Leprosy at the Middle Age and current obesity are diseases that have been socially stigmatized because the body manifestations and the no pathological causes attributed to them as well. The comparison between social perceptions that cause both diseases show that body has been, and still is, a constant symbol and a social agent of the behavior normative speeches in Western culture.

La lepra medieval y la obesidad contemporánea son enfermedades que han sido socialmente estigmatizadas por las manifestaciones corporales que ocasionan, así como por las causas no patológicas atribuidas a ellas. La comparación entre las percepciones que han generado ambos padecimientos revela que el cuerpo ha sido y es símbolo constante y agente social asiduo de los discursos normativos de la conducta en la cultura occidental.
