El atravesamiento de la imagen en la mirada de van Gogh

Abstract

Between October 23rd, 1888 and December 23rd, that same year, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin shared in Arles, south of France, two months of intense discussions and creative work. On December 1st, Gauguin finished his friend’s portrait which he titled The painter of sunflowers, the vision attained by Vincent through that painting, would untie a storm amongst both painters that would conclude with the self retrench of van Gogh’s ear and his confinement in psychiatric facilities during his last two years of life. This paper inquires from a psychoanalytical perspective, what the other’s look reveals to Vincent and the way in which van Gogh’s view, crosses through the image restoring another sort of subjectivity, that while producing the emergency of a mortal design, literally transfigures him and hurl him into madness.

Entre el 23 de octubre de 1888 y el 23 de diciembre de ese mismo año, Vincent van Gogh y Paul Gauguin comparten en Arles, al sur de Francia, dos meses de intensas discusiones y trabajo creativo. El 1° de diciembre Gauguin termina el retrato de su amigo, que titularía El pintor de girasoles, la visión que obtendría Vincent a través de esa pintura, habría de desatar una tormenta entre ambos pintores que culminaría con el autocercenamiento de la oreja de van Gogh y su reclusión en psiquiátricos donde pasaría sus últimos dos años de vida. El presente artículo indaga, desde una perspectiva psicoanalítica, sobre lo que la mirada del otro desvela para Vincent y, la manera en como la mirada de van Gogh atraviesa la imagen instaurando una subjetividad de otro orden, que a la vez que produce la emergencia de un designio mortal, lo transfigura literalmente y lo precipita en la locura.
