Prácticas de atención utilizadas por adultos mayores con enfermedades crónicas

Abstract

The chronic illnesses that are the primary causes of mortality among older adults present a serious problem which requires changes in life style of the sick persons. Objectives: To gain an understanding of the medical practices used by a group of older adults with chronic illnesses in México City. Research methods: Qualitative methods were used to select a sample of 50 older adults who were clients of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. Results: The older adults preferred to first use medical services and complimented these with other alternative treatments. This decision was influenced by their socioeconomic status as well as the relationship with their doctors. Conclusions: It is necessary to have a good patient-doctor relationship so that the patient may feel comfortable discussing problem they may be experiencing with the prescribed course of treatment. This will allow patients to seek other course of treatment with the help and support of their family and the medical technology. This should therefore result in better results or health outcomes their treatment.

Las enfermedades crónicas son las principales causas de mortalidad de los adultos mayores, presentan graves problemas para su atención y control debido a los cambios que requieren en los estilos de vida del enfermo. Objetivos: describir las prácticas de atención que utilizan un grupo de adultos mayores con enfermedades crónicas en la ciudad de Mexico. Material y método: se emplearon métodos cualitativos en una muestra de 50 adultos mayores derechohabientes del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. Res1tados: los adultos mayores utilizan los servicios de la biomedicina de manera preferencial, recurriendo a otras opciones de manera complementaria. En esta elección intervienen factores como las condiciones socioeconómicas y la relación médico paciente. Conclusiones.;es necesario tener una mejor relación médico paciente que permita al enfermo expresar sus problemas con el tratamiento y buscar soluciones conjuntas con la familla y el equipo de salud para una mejor atención.
