El Programa de Apoyo a Estudiantes Indígenas en Instituciones de Educación Superior

Abstract

The Support Program for Indigenous Students in Higher Education Institutions (PAEIIES, for its acronym in Spanish) is an ethnic-based initiative implemented in Mexico in 2001, with funding from the Ford Foundation. This article presents an analysis of this Program from a study of indigenous graduates from two universities who were affiliated to it, since the perspective of theories of distributive justice and the sociology of inequality. First, we review the landscape of ethnic-based initiatives in Mexico, and then we discuss the emergence and the institutional reaches of the PAEIIES. Finally, we present the impact the program had on the indigenous graduates in three areas: their scholar trajectories, the relationship with their communities, and their access to labor market.

El Programa de Apoyo a Estudiantes Indígenas en Instituciones de Educación Superior (PAEIIES) es una iniciativa de base étnica implementada en México a partir del año 2001 con financiamiento de la Fundación Ford. En este artículo se presenta un análisis del Programa a partir de un estudio con egresados indígenas de dos universidades, que estuvieron adscritos a éste, desde la perspectiva de las teorías de justicia distributiva y la sociología de la desigualdad. En primer lugar, se revisa el panorama de iniciativas de base étnica en México, posteriormente, se analiza el surgimiento y los alcances institucionales del PAEIIES. Por último, se presentan los impactos que el Programa tuvo en los egresados indígenas en tres ámbitos: sus trayectorias escolares, la relación con sus comunidades y su inserción al mercado laboral.
