El valor actual de la Universidad

Abstract

El presente artículo aborda el concepto mismo de valor, y se le concibe como una creación y una práctica individual y social. Definir el valor actual de la Universidad lleva a una discusión que se resuelve en la búsqueda de lo que ella ha de significar para la sociedad actual. El valor que tradicionalmente se le atribuye —transmisión de conocimientos e investigación— es ya inoperante dado que sus funciones centrales se realizan con éxito fuera de Ella. Por eso se postula el valor de la Universidad en la incorporación de la imaginación creativa para formar a los estudiantes en la conciencia y la responsabilidad de crear su futuro personal y el de la sociedad. Dicho valor no se limita al pasado ni al presente; asume a éstos como lo que da forma al futuro. Enseñar e investigar los asuntos de la sociedad y de sus miembros para construir su futuro a través de una actitud imaginativa, creadora, es el valor actual de la Universidad.

This article examines the concept of values, conceived as an individual and societal creation and practice. To define the value of the university today, it is necessary to examine the meaning of values in contemporary society. The traditional value assigned to universities, that of transmitting knowledge and research, is no longer unique, as these vital functions are also accomplished outside the university. It is therefore postulated that the value of the university is to incorporate creative imagination into its task of shaping the future. The university must teach students to consciously and responsibly create their own and society's future. This value is not limited to the past or the present, but also forms the basis for shaping the future. The value of the university today is thus to teach and investigate issues by which society and its members can build their future through creativity and imagination.
