Matemática medieval

Abstract

Mathematical development, during the ten centuries of the Middle ages, confronted faith as a great barrior. It was due to the translation and diffusion work done by the Arabs that the knowledge generated by the Arab, Greek, Hindu and Chinese cultures could be preserved and disseminated, as well as the strong translation and writing work done in the monasteries. This development was precarious and it only resolved mercantile needs, religious date counting and navigation. It was precisely a businessman, later mathematician, Fibonacci, who made the bigger contributions. This article briefly describes the history of the most important medieval mathematics, its contributions and its obvious relation with science and social needs.

El desarrollo matemático en diez siglos de medioevo se enfrenta al gran muro de la fe. Fue gracias al trabajo de traducción y difusión de los árabes que se preservó y difundió el conocimiento generado por las culturas árabe, griega, hindú y china; así como a la ardua labor de traducción y escritura que se realizó en la vida monástica. Este desarrollo fue precario y sólo resolvió básicamente necesidades mercantiles, de conteo de fechas religiosas, de navegación. Precisamente un comerciante que devino en matemático, Fibonacci, hizo las aportaciones más relevantes. El presente artículo hace un breve recuento histórico de los matemáticos medievales más importantes, con sus aportaciones, y muestra la patente relación entre la ciencia y las necesidades sociales.
