El trazo de Las Lomas y de la Hipódromo Condesa

Abstract

The article describes the origins and consolidation, between the twenties and forties in the last Century, of one of the most important residential quarters located on the western side of Mexico City, emphasizing the role of its developers and the one played by José Luis Cuevas, the architect and author of the urban design. The article follows a genealogy of this type of urban developments, linking them to several examples of British and American urban designs starting from the middle and last decades of the XIX Century, as well as the possible influence of the Garden City ideas of Ebenezer Howard. The author concludes with interesting points of view over the influence of this kind of solutions upon Mexican town planning.

Se describe la gestación y consolidación, entre los años 10 y 40 del siglo pasado, de uno de los principales barrios residenciales al poniente de la Ciudad de México, destacando el papel que sus promotores tuvieron en el mismo, así como el que desempeñó el arquitecto José Luis Cuevas, autor del proyecto. El artículo traza una genealogía de este tipo de desarrollos, vinculándola a ejemplos del diseño urbano inglés y norteamericano que se remontan a mediados y fines del siglo XIX, así como a la posible influencia de los principios de la Ciudad Jardín de Ebenezer Howard. El autor concluye con observaciones interesantes sobre la influencia de este tipo de soluciones sobre el urbanismo mexicano.
