Abstract

To begin with, Marc Bloch warns that it is “the peasants that must be spoken of”. To speak of the peasant in singular leads to misconception, and in addition means to ignore France’s history. Everything is important to Bloch: medieval clearing of land for settlement, village design, the type of soils, the conditions of the terrain; the peasant population, the lords, laborers, rural solidarity. The differences of wealth brings about individualism but with it, also comes the community. And Bloch concludes that it is the peasants’ task to adapt to the “new times”.

Marc Bloch advierte, de entrada, que es de “los campesinos de quienes hay que hablar”. Hablar del campesino en singular lleva al error, y representa, además, ignorar la historia de Francia. Para Bloch importa todo: el desmonte medieval, el diseño de las aldeas, el tipo de suelo, las condiciones del terreno: el campesinado, el señor, los braceros, los labradores, la solidaridad rural. La diferencia de fortunas provoca el individualismo pero surge también con éste la colectividad. Y es a los campesinos a quienes les corresponde adaptarse a los “nuevos tiempos”, concluye Bloch.
