El concepto de responsabilidad como clave de lectura de "Los orígenes del totalitarismo"

Abstract

The concept of responsibility centrally transverses Arendt’s thought, which makes it pertinent to assume it as key to the reading of her texts. In the present article this analytical perspective focuses in The Origins of Totalitarianism. Considering that totalitarianism is a regime of total domination that eliminates responsibility, this task makes use of discovery by contrast, that is, a way to recognize the –so to say– “positive” meaning of responsibility, by means of the analysis of every form used by totalitarianism to escape it and abolish it. To show the haul from the evasion to the abolition of responsibility, the theories and the forms of escape from responsibility are presented in the first place. Then, there will be a consideration for two prominent points of the way trodden by totalitarianism to impose a model of man whose center is the abolition of responsibility: a) the rupture with reality and the abolition of the capacity for thought, and b) the principle that “everything is possible” and the suppression of the idea of humanity. Last, some conclusions about the concept of responsibility.

El concepto de responsabilidad atraviesa centralmente el pensamiento de Arendt, por lo que resulta pertinente asumirlo como clave de lectura de sus textos. En el presente artículo esta perspectiva de análisis se focaliza en Los orígenes del totalitarismo. Considerando que el totalitarismo es un régimen de dominación total que elimina la responsabilidad, en este trabajo se utiliza el descubrimiento por contraste, es decir, el camino del reconocimiento del significado –por así decirlo– “positivo” de la responsabilidad, mediante el análisis de todas las formas empleadas por el totalitarismo para escapar de ella y abolirla. Para mostrar el recorrido que va desde la evasión hasta la abolición de la responsabilidad, en primer lugar se presentan las teorías y las formas de escape de la responsabilidad. Luego se consideran dos puntos prominentes del camino recorrido por el totalitarismo para imponer un modelo de hombre cuyo centro es la abolición de la responsabilidad: a) la ruptura con la realidad y la abolición de la capacidad de pensar, y b) el principio “todo es posible” y la supresión de la idea de humanidad. Por último, se exponen las conclusiones acerca del concepto de responsabilidad.
